My fellow Americans…
The ones who would remind us of the Boston Massacre,
and Washington’s winter soldiers,
Who celebrate independence,
Bucking despots ever bolder.
Then light the fuse and swim in booze,
Staring at the star-spangled sky,
Always remembering to remember
Another 4th of July.
The ones who would sing songs of abolition,
And swing low with amazing grace,
Hoist up blue union colors,
Punching slavecatchers in the face.
Those who’d died for General Moses,
To deliver freedom’s train,
Catch fire of Willy Garrison,
And a bit of Freddy Douglass brain.
The ones who keep likenesses and images of Iwo Jima,
Flashes of Normandy and Auschwitz,
Who knew the greatest generation,
Depression-babies still puttin on the ritz.
Those who would show no greater love,
Bathing in blood of the world’s tyrants,
Now still think of the grandparents,
Every June 6th and December 7th.
Are we still those people?
There is now a naked emperor despot-ing,
plotting old atrocities anew,
Filling the cities and streets with terror,
Like Uncle Sam come all unglued.
The crowned rebel yells atop a cross,
All the time whistling Dixie.
Der Fuhrer, Il Duce, and the Don,
A pair of one-eighties equals three-sixty.
We The People won the prize,
Life and liberty as equals under law,
The Bill of Rights guiding justice,
Brave and free until divided we fall.
Sychophants play house while clowns hold court,
We The People are needed now.
Shall we sieg to the heil for the orange man-god?
Is it ‘Liberty or death!’…Or shall we bow?
Does it exist in theory or fact,
This constitution of enlightened humankind?
Is thin veneer fallen from civilization,
For us to unhinge, unravel, unwind?
Is there still a center holding,
Does old glory and new light exist?
Are we done with freedom’s experiment,
Or do we rise, rally, and resist?
Are We still The People?
